describes about 400 modern and historic
varieties, most of which are Tall Bearded (TB). For best selection each
year order early
by mail, by toll-free fax, or in person during Iris in
Bloom (April 12-27). We accept
VISA and MasterCard as well as personal check, money order, or cash.
With a rainy
Summer and cold Winter, we expect 2008 bloom will be very good. Irises need the seasonal cold to flower. They love cold weather,
which is why we grow and test each variety for heat tolerance and growth
performance. Summer here is the challenge – not Winter.
If you are in drought, be sure to water your irises deeply every 10
days. We recommend soaker hoses rather than overhead sprinklers,
especially when the temperature is over 80 degrees.
The
quality and quantity of bloom in the Spring depends on the amount of water
(or rainfall) the irises receive approximately 8 to 10 weeks before bloom
begins.
In North Texas, February moisture makes April bloom.
We apply granular fertilizer about six weeks before bloom and again
in late Autumn.
A good memory trick is to feed your irises in North Texas near the
candy holidays of Valentine’s Day and Halloween.
The Smithsonian Institute, an Argyle Acres customer,
